A couple of trailer releases today worth a look.
First up, filmmaker Quentin Dupieux (“Rubber,” “Deerskin”) satirises superheroes with his upcoming adult dark comedy “Smoking Causes Coughing” which hits select theaters and VOD on March 31st.
The title follows the misadventures of a Power Rangers-esque crime fighters called the Tobacco Force. After a devastating battle against a diabolical giant turtle, the Tobacco Force is sent on a mandatory week-long retreat to strengthen their decaying group cohesion
Their sojourn goes well until Lézardin, Emperor of Evil, decides to annihilate planet Earth. Gilles Lellouche, Anaïs Demoustier, Vincent Lacoste, Jean-Pascal Zadi, and Oulaya Amamra co-star.
Next comes the first trailer for Benjamin Millepied’s “Carmen,” a new film adaptation of the famed opera by Georges Bizet and starring recent breakout stars Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”) and Melissa Barrera (“Scream”).
This loose, modernized adaptation of the 19th century opera will follow Carmen (Barrera) as she travels from Mexico to Los Angeles looking for freedom. Mescal plays romantic lead Aidan. Sony Pictures Classics will open the film in New York and Los Angeles on April 21st.
Then there’s the trailer for “About My Father,” a new comedy starring Robert De Niro, Sebastian Maniscalco, Leslie Bibb, Kim Cattrall, Anders Holm, Brett Dier, and David Rasche.
The film centers around Sebastian (Maniscalco) who is encouraged by his fiancée (Leslie Bibb) to bring his immigrant, hairdresser father, Salvo (De Niro), to a weekend get-together with her super-rich and exceedingly eccentric family.
The weekend develops into what can only be described as a culture clash, leaving Sebastian and Salvo to discover that the great thing about family is everything about family.
Maniscalco also penned the script alongside Austen Earl. Andrew Miano, Judi Marmel, Paul Weitz, and Chris Weitz produce with Laura Terruso directing. The film opens in cinemas May 26th.
