Steven Soderbergh’s “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” won the Super Bowl weekend at the domestic box office with an estimated $8.2 million.
That’s by far the lowest showing of the three films in the Channing Tatum-led franchise, though to be fair is playing in only around half the theaters of its predecessors.
The film, which has been critically poorly received, made for streaming initially until Warner Bros. Discovery changed its plan and pushed it out theatrically. Worldwide it has debut with $18.6 million in total.
It led the standard quiet box office of Super Bowl weekend where most of the eyes are on James Cameron’s battle with himself as the 3D remastered re-release of “Titanic” went up against “Avatar: The Way of Water”.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” came in second with an estimated $6.9 million domestically whilst over overseas it earned another $18.9 million for a worldwide tally of $2.214 billion.
Meanwhile “Titanic” was third with $6.4 million and $15.9 million overseas for a worldwide tally of $2.217 billion. In other words, the re-release kept the “Avatar” sequel from beating “Titanic” this weekend, and the two are neck-and-neck on the ‘all time’ list.
The Super Bowl-themed sports comedy “80 for Brady” came in fourth in its second weekend with an estimated $6 million for a domestic total of $25 million so far.
Last week’s M. Night Shyamalan psychological thriller “Knock at the Cabin” is vying with “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” for fifth place with both tracking to earn around $55.5 million each – ‘Cabin’ falling 61% from its opening weekend.
