Hot on the heels of “Let the Right One In” and “American Gigolo” being axed at Showtime, two more series have also been cancelled after just one season over at Hulu – FX on Hulu’s “Kindred” and the streamer’s original series “Reboot”.
“Kindred” is based on Octavia E. Butler’s 1979 novel and stars Mallori Johnson as a modern Los Angeles woman who is pulled back and forth in time to a 19th-century Southern plantation. Micah Stock, Ryan Kwanten and Gayle Rankin also star.
The series debuted on December 13th with all eight episodes. Showrunner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (“Watchmen”) envisioned a multiple-season series and is expected he will shop around the FX Productions-produced drama.
It marks a rare one-and-done at FX, others being “Terriers,” “Lights Out,” “Y: The Last Man” and “The Bastard Executioner”.
Meanwhile, Hulu has also cancelled “Modern Family” co-creator Steven Levitan’s meta-satirical series “Reboot”. Paul Reiser, Rachel Bloom, Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville, Calum Worthy, and Judy Greer led the cast.
The series dealt with the behind-the-scenes making of a revival of a classic early 2000s sitcom. In the process, it made fun of reboots, the modern streaming landscape, and the classic backstage drama of a cast that previously had serious issues with each other being forced to reunite.
The series rolled out weekly from September 20th and ended late October on a cliffhanger. Both shows scored solid reviews but neither was acclaimed, and it’s unclear what their viewership numbers were.
