Outside of Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamill’s most famous role arguably is that of the voice of The Joker in “Batman: The Animated Series” among other media.
Hamill’s take on the character has been iconic over the years and has been considered by many to be the definitive version of the Clown Prince of Crime since he first took on the character in 1992. Since then he returned to the voice across several spinoff series, video games, and films.
Throughout his whole run, he starred opposite Kevin Conroy as the voice of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Conroy similarly delivered his own definitive take on the Caped Crusader over a thirty year span before his death to cancer late last year.
With the passing of his friend and collaborator, Hamill tells Empire Magazine (via Screen Rant) that he does not believe he will return to the role of The Joker again. He adds that he already didn’t take on offers for the role without Conroy’s involvement in recent years:
“They would call and say, ‘They want you to do the Joker,’ and my only question was, ‘Is Kevin Batman?’ If they said yes, I would say, ‘I’m in.’ We were like partners. We were like Laurel and Hardy. Without Kevin there, there doesn’t seem to be a Batman for me.”
Conroy will be heard one last time as Batman in Rocksteady Games’ upcoming “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” game which marks his final performance in the role. Both Conroy and Hamill last played their roles together on screen in an episode of “Scooby-Doo and Guess Who” in 2019.
