Years ago, a Tumblr post showed an image of a shoe stitched with inscriptions for what appeared to be an old Martin Scorsese-directed film titled “Goncharov” and a slogan dubbing it the “greatest Mafia film ever made”.
Of course, there is no such film. The best guess in the time since has been it’s a misprinted piece of promo merchandise for the celebrated 2008 Italian drama feature “Gomorrah” which Scorsese allowed for his name to be lent to it in order to help market the film.
Nonetheless, it hasn’t stopped the internet from doing what it does and led to various creative types posting comments or visual imagery trying to gaslight people into thinking the project is real.
Cut to this week, and Scorsese’s actress/filmmaker daughter Francesca posted a TikTok video in which her father (via text message) finally acknowledges the fake film’s existence.
Francesca shared a screenshot of a text conversation between her and her father. She asks if he has seen a New York Times article on the “Goncharov” movement, to which he amusingly responded: “Yes. I made that film years ago.”
Scorsese next has the high-profile 2023 release “Killers of the Flower Moon” on the way with Leonardo DiCaprio, Rober De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Lily Gladstone and Brendan Fraser starring.
