Stahleski On “John Wick 4” Scale & Tone

Lionsgate

Each entry of the “John Wick” franchise has seen an increase in scale, complexity and boldness of the action sequences, which have set the new standard for on-screen fights.

That will continue with the upcoming fourth entry as the film’s director Chad Stahelski tells Empire Magazine that things are going to get even “more epic” with the new one.

Talking about the film’s tone, Stahelski explained some of the movie’s influences, and in the process, reveals why he loves working on this franchise so much:

“If you took The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, crossed it with Zatoichi, and threw in a Greek myth, you’d probably get something close to this. And who else f—— says those kinds of sentences? Now you know why I like doing John Wicks.”

Stahelski says that even though the team had nailed down the franchise’s formula into a comfortable rhythm, none of them rested on their laurels and pushed themselves to keep trying harder:

“It gets a little scary after the third one because now we have a formula that works. But you have to throw caution to the wind and say, ‘F— it, we’re not doing that again.’ So now, on number four, we have multiple storylines. The movie feels different. It feels more epic.”

The new film spans the globe in terms of locations and will include a scene shot at the Louvre Museum in Paris, along with filming locations in Berlin, Germany; Aqaba, Jordan; and Tokyo and Osaka in Japan.

“John Wick: Chapter 4” is due out in theaters on March 24th 2023.
