The “Glass Onion” Reviews Are In

Netflix

Full reviews are out for Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” which hits cinemas today and so far the word is on par with the first film.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie sits at a 94% (8.1/10) approval rating from critics and a 96% (4.7/5) from audiences.

That’s comparable to the 97% (8.3/10) critics and 92% (4.4/5) audience rating for the first film – suggesting critics are a little more divided but audiences are little more pleased this time.

Here’s a sampling of quotes:

“Johnson, who once again also penned the script, has no shortage of ammunition for his rat-a-tat takes on pop-culture ephemera and the navel-gazing delusions of wealth and fame.” – Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly

“The first one was good … this one is better: an ingenious, headspinningly preposterous and enjoyable new whodunnit romp featuring Daniel Craig as the legendary detective from the deep south, Benoit Blanc.” – Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

“I can’t say much about what happens in “Glass Onion” without giving away some surprises, but I can say that some of the pleasure comes from being wrong about what will happen next.” – A.O. Scott, New York Times

“One of the purest pop pleasures of the season, the kind of irresistible crowd-pleaser that balances its franchise obligations with a clear sense of wit and creative purpose.” – Barry Hertz, Globe and Mail

“‘Glass Out’ expands into something even more extravagant than the first ‘Knives Out,’ which is what you want, even if at moments it can feel like a little more than you want.” – Owen Gleiberman, Variety

“It is shiny with mischief, crafted with guile, and performed with eager wit… Why, then, should the whole enterprise feel so curiously thin and cold to the touch?” – Anthony Lane, New Yorker

Johnson has indicated a third film in the series will be his next feature and he tells Deadline he’s already been taking notes with plans to get to work on the script in the new year.

“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” is in cinemas for a one week run from today ahead of a Netflix premiere on December 23rd.
