Brendan Fraser Won’t Be At The Globes

Brendan Fraser is the seeming frontrunner to land the Oscar nomination for best actor for his performance in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale”.

That means the actor is also likely to pop up at numerous other awards shows on the way. One major exception though will be the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globes ceremony which is back on NBC in 2023.

Fraser confirmed to GQ magazine that he will not participate in the Globes if he is nominated. In 2018, Fraser famously accused former HFPA president Philip Berk of groping him at a 2003 luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Berk later disputed Fraser’s allegations. Fraser says:

“I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. No, I will not participate… It’s because of the history that I have with them. And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite. You can call me a lot of things, but not that.”

Fraser previously said his experience with Berk made him “retreat” from Hollywood and “[feel like] something had been taken away from me.”

The Globes and the HFPA have since gone through their own upheaval, but Fraser says at the moment he does not believe in any of the reforms the HFPA has made in the last year: “Maybe time will tell if they’re going to… I don’t know what they’re going to do. I don’t know.”
