Though both shows were produced entirely separately, the similar release window timing of HBO’s “House of the Dragon” and Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” led to something of a ratings ‘duel’ between the two properties.
With both shows over for a few weeks now, ratings giant Nielsen has released some new findings about the habits of the viewership of both series.
With the “Game of Thrones” spin-off, the series saw an uptick in viewership across six of its first nine episodes, peaking at its sixth episode which was also the one week where it beat “Rings of Power” in streaming viewership.
In comparison, the Tolkien-inspired series peaked with its pilot and second episode, before episode three dropped sharply. Things stayed steady there until the seventh episode when it rose again.
The findings noted around 35-40% of viewers watched both shows. The numbers only reflect the streaming viewers for “House of the Dragon,” not the HBO subscribers who watched the show on the pay-TV channel.
