Gilroy Talks Yavin Return In “Andor”

The upcoming second season will take “Star Wars: Andor” up to events of Rogue One, and so that means the understandable inclusion of the Rebel base on the planet Yavin 4 in the show’s second season.

As part of an expansive interview with Collider, series showrunner Tony Gilroy revealed that one of the new writers onboard for the next run is Tom Bissell, a newcomer to the franchise but a megafan of the property.

Gilroy was happy to sing the praises of Bissell, who’ll be joined by returnees Dan Gilroy and Beau Willimon in the new run:

“Tom Bissell is really cool and really, really interesting, versatile, really good writer. But also a very, very, very big Star Wars fan, which we really wanted to make sure we had another pro because we’re going into Rogue [One], and we’re going to Yavin, and then we’re going into places where we eventually need to really weave our way back to the source. So Tom came in, and he’s been great. So he’s got some episodes too.”

Gilroy also spoke about why he isn’t directing any episodes of the series, saying he has: “way too much else to do. I can’t do it.” He thinks it benefits the show though as he says: “There are scenes where if I directed them, I would’ve been half as ambitious as the directors that did it.”

The Yavin 4 planet and its base first appeared in George Lucas’ original “Star Wars” film and re-appeared in “Rogue One”. Pre-production on the new season is well underway ahead of filming beginning on November 21st.
