Pakistani-Canadian journalist turned Oscar and Emmy-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has reportedly been set as director of a secret new “Star Wars” film at Lucasfilm according to Deadline.
The trade indicates the project is the Damon Lindelof-developed feature first revealed back in March. According to their sources, Lindelof is co-writing the project – though his writing partner has not been revealed at this time.
The script is still being written, which means production is still a while off, but the setting of a director this early was said to be important to both Lucasfilm and Lindelof so that Obaid-Chinoy can add her vision to the film.
At present, this seems to be the “Star Wars” film with the most momentum out of any currently in development at the studio.
Obaid-Chinoy helmed several episodes of “Ms. Marvel” and is best known for directing her Oscar-winning documentary shorts like “Saving Face” and “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness”. She recently committed to directing “Brilliance” at Paramount Pictures.
