“Death Note” Series Gets “White City” Writer

Netflix

Halia Abdel-Meguid has been set to write and executive produce the live-action series adaptation of the Japanese manga and anime series “Death Note” at Netflix.

Announced back in July, the new series will be unconnected to Adam Wingard’s 2017 live-action film and is an entirely new take on the source material from writer Tsugumi Ohba and artist Takeshi Obata.

The manga follows a teenager who discovers a black notebook that winds up providing him power over life and death. The project is being produced by “Stranger Things” creators Matt & Ross Duffer’s newly launched production company Upside Down.

Abdel-Meguid is a longtime fan of the manga, speaks fluent Japanese and has previously lived in Tokyo. She recently worked with the Duffers as a writing consultant on their series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s novel “The Talisman,” and penned Hulu’s in the works series adaptation of Erik Larson’s novel “The Devil in the White City”.
