Millennium Media’s upcoming film adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s fantasy warrior heroine character “Red Sonja” has seen a casting change.
Rhona Mitra (“Doomsday,” “The Last Ship”) has signed on for an undisclosed role in the sword and sorcery feature, whilst at the same time Oliver Trevena has exited the project in his role as Tr’aal.
Trevena, who was announced for the film back in August, reportedly left the project due to scheduling conflicts. His character was a warrior who joins Sonja in her crusade against an evil emperor.
It’s unclear if Mitra is taking over a gender-switched version of role or if she’s playing a new character entirely.
The project is currently in production at the Bulgarian Nu Boyana Studio with additional shoots at the Greek Nu Boyana Studio scheduled later in the month.
Wallis Day, Robert Sheehan, Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Eliza Matengu, Manal El-Feitury and Katrina Durden co-star.
M.J. Bassett (“Solomon Kane”) is directing from a screenplay by Joey Soloway (“Transparent”) and Tasha Huo (Netflix’s upcoming “Tomb Raider” series).
