The teaser trailer for Disney’s live-action version of their 1989 animated classic “The Little Mermaid” arrived at the D23 Expo last weekend.
The clip sees the character obscured as she swims through the ocean, looks into a shipwreck, and ultimately sees something happening on the water’s surface. It’s then we’re offered a first look at Halle Bailey in the role as she teases her version of the song “Part of Your World”.
According to Variety, the clip has reportedly earned over 104 million global views (not including UK, Ireland or Australia) in its first 24 hours, which flies high above other Disney live-action titles like “Beauty and the Beast” (98 million), “Aladdin” (74 million views) and “Cruella” (68 million views).
In addition, the clip was the top trending topic on Friday night and remains the No. 1 trending video on YouTube’s ‘Movies’ section, with reposted versions in second and third.
Rob Marshall helms the film, which also stars Jonah Hauer-King, Art Malik, Noma Dumezweni, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy, with Daveed Diggs, Jacob Tremblay, and Awkwafina in voice roles. The film opens on May 26th 2023.
