Paramount To Ramp Up Its Theatrical Slate

After selling off much of its 2020 and 2021 film slate to streamers during the pandemic, Paramount Pictures has had a huge theatrical comeback in 2022 with numerous box-office success stories.

Along with the mega-grossing “Top Gun: Maverick,” the studio has consistently been releasing hits through the year, including “Scream,” “Jackass Forever,” “The Lost City,” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”.

Now Paramount Pictures President Brian Robbins, speaking at the Bank of America Securities conference on Wednesday, says he remains very much committed to the studio’s current strategy, saying: “Theatrical still has the greatest impact. That sort of theatrical release, 45 days later to streaming, that’s working beautifully.”

In fact, he confirms the studio is doubling down on that approach. The company’s slate consists of eight theatrical releases this year, with the plan now being to boost that to 10-12 releases next year and 12-15 later on.

In addition, he doesn’t see streaming as an ‘enemy’, rather as an additional potential revenue stream and offers valuable information on viewer demographics.

The studio is also flexible when necessary, such as with the delayed streaming window for ‘Maverick’ and the upcoming horror film “Smile”. Originally slated for streaming, Robbins says “Smile” scored “crazy well” in test screenings and was quickly moved to a theatrical release later this month.

Half of 2023’s film slate is already set with “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” “Scream 6,” “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” and “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie”.
