Garlin’s Murray Killed Off On “Goldbergs”

The tenth season of the ABC sitcom “The Goldbergs” kicks off next month, and a time jump within the series’ narrative means its eponymous family will lose one of its key members – family patriarch Murray (Jeff Garlin).

Speaking with EW, co-showrunner Alex Barnow confirms the first episode begins several months after Garlin’s character Murray has died offscreen:

“We are sort of starting from a place of multiple months removed from his death. The family has not reconciled the fact that their father’s gone but has sort of moved on and has dealt with a lot of that. Jeff won’t be in the series this year, and so far the stories have been largely about looking forward rather than looking back.”

The series chronicles the life of a suburban middle-class family in the 1980s. Garlin had starred in the show since its premiere in 2013 but, following a series of on-set misconduct allegations in December 2021, he unceremoniously exited.

His few appearances in the remainder of the ninth season blended unaired footage, unused dialogue and even some not-so-convincing CGI. Garlin has denied any allegations of wrongdoing, but ABC confirmed in April that Garlin would no longer be a part of the cast.

Wendi McLendon-Covey now leads the cast as Beverly raises her three often at odds kids Adam (Sean Giambrone), Barry (Troy Gentile) and Erica (Hayley Orrantia). The new season premieres September 21st on ABC.
