The worst box-office weekend of the Summer, and the second worst of the year so far, has arrived with the biggest newcomer – Screen Gems horror film “The Invitation” – topping the box-office with estimates indicating it is headed for $6-7 million for the three days.
That’s pretty good for a $10 million budgeted film with poor critical and mixed audience reviews.
The box-office, on the whole, is tracking for an estimated $54 million for all titles, ahead of only the last weekend of January box-office which pulled in a total of just $34.9 million this year.
MGM went wider than anticipated with George Miller’s “3,000 Years of Longing” which scored mixed reviews and is tracking to open at $2.9 million – not a great number for a $60 million-budgeted film.
Surprisingly MGM’s owner, Amazon, opted to send Stallone’s new film “Samaritan” straight to streaming despite scoring better reviews than either of the new wide releases.
The IMAX reissue of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is set to pull in around $1.4 million for the weekend and has the best per-theatre average of any title this week.
The well-reviewed John Boyega-led hostage drama “Breaking” also opened and snagged $360,000 in limited release.
In terms of returning titles, “Bullet Train” is headed for a $5.6 million fourth weekend – falling just 30%. “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero,” which dominated last weekend, is acting like most anime – plunging 78% with just a $4.6 million haul expected this weekend.
The Idris Elba-led “Beast” is also headed for a fairly steep 63% fall down to $4.34 million.
Finally, the release of “Top Gun: Maverick” on PVOD platforms earlier this week has had no impact on the film’s performance – the title maintaining its fairly consistent 15% dropoff rate and is still headed for $5.05 million this weekend.
