Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions have set an August 11th 2023 release date for their film adaptation of their “Gran Turismo” professional driving simulator franchise.

The project has just released an official synopsis which reveals they are avoiding the “Need for Speed” route of building a fictional crime drama narrative around a racing game. Instead, they’re taking the approach of an aspirational drama inspired by a true story involving the games.

Described as ‘the ultimate wish fulfilment tale,’ the story follows a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills were good enough that he won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.

“District 9” and “Elysium” helmer Neill Blomkamp, previously rumored to be the frontrunner, has now been confirmed to direct the project which is moving at top gear. Jason Hall penned the script while Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Doug Belgrad and Dana Brunetti produce.

The film arrives in the wake of PlayStation Productions’ “Uncharted” adaptation which grossed more than $400 million at the global box office earlier this year. The “Gran Turismo” game series has sold more than 85 million copies to date.
