The fate of J.J. Abrams’ HBO early in pre-production sci-fi drama series “Demimonde,” the first show the producer/filmmaker has written since 2008’s “Fringe,” is reportedly uncertain.
According to THR, the years in the works project is on the bubble at HBO as new Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is said to be frustrated by the lack of output from Bad Robot’s $250 million overall deal with the company.
A big source of contention is said to be the show’s first season budget which is reportedly around the mid-$200 million range. It’s a number far higher than the sub-$200 million budget of the upcoming “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon”.
Abrams is directing the pilot for the series which has already reportedly changed showrunners and will star Danielle Deadwyler. A decision as to whether the series moves forward is expected to come this week.
Another source of contention is said to be DC Comics properties with frustration that Abrams has laid claim to a number of DC characters (eg. John Constantine) but has yet to get anything on the air.
