The Cannes Film Festival is closing up and some major North American acquisition deals are going down following their screenings at the event.

First up, A24 has scored North American rights to Charlotte Wells’ “Aftersun” starring Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio whilst Barry Jenkins produce. The story follows Sophie who reflects on the shared joy and private melancholy of a holiday she took with her father twenty years earlier.

Next, Neon has acquired “Force Majeure” director Ruben Ostlund’s satire “Triangle of Sadness” starring Woody Harrelson as a rabid Marxist who is the captain of a cruise for the super-rich. The near $8 million deal beat out several buyers including A24.

Then, Utopia has acquired Danish-Iranian director Ali Abbasi’s boundary-pushing serial killer thriller “Holy Spider” which follows a family man (Mehdi Bajestani) who embarks on a religious quest to ‘cleanse’ the holy Iranian city of Mashhad of street prostitutes.

Finally, Sony Pictures Classics has landed Mia Hansen-Love’s critically acclaimed intimate drama “One Fine Morning” starring Lea Seydoux. She plays a young mother trying to care for her ailing father while embarking on a passionate affair with a charming yet emotionally unavailable man.
