Director James Mangold wrapped filming on the fifth “Indiana Jones” feature back in late February after a long production that got hit by pandemic-related delays and injuries.
Nonetheless, the film is in the can and while we’re over a year away from seeing the final results, one of the film’s stars has been talking up what we can expect.
Mads Mikkelsen, out doing promotional rounds for his role as the villain in the new “Fantastic Beasts” film, spoke with THR about his work in the new Indy movie. Along with talking about his love for “Raiders of The Lost Ark,” the actor says the new instalment is going back to the roots of the franchise:
“[‘Raiders of The Lost Ark’] was one of my favourite films, and it just oozed that golden period of serials from the 1940s – and that’s in the fifth film as well. They’re going heavily back to the first and second film and getting that original feel, the original Indy, something dense and epic. It felt like a Spielberg film, though it’s obviously James making it with the same vision.”
Spielberg is still involved as a producer on the film which also sees a nearly 80-year-old Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role. Despite his age, Mikkelsen has nothing but praise for Ford’s physicality:
“I remember the first day we were shooting, it was a night shoot, then we stopped at 5 a.m. – and then he got on his mountain bike and went biking for 50 kilometers. Harrison is a monster of a man, a very nice monster.”
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renee Wilson and Toby Jones also star in the movie which opens in cinemas on June 30th 2023.
