Devolver Digital has announced “Return to Monkey Island,” a new game in the iconic franchise which will arrive later this year.
This will mark the first full re-teaming of co-creators Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman on an entry since the acclaimed first two LucasArts titles “The Secret of Monkey Island” in 1990 and “Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge” in 1991.
As a result, the game is going the “Terminator: Dark Fate” route and ignoring the events of the subsequent less well-regarded third through fifth entries (“Curse of Monkey Island,” “Escape from Monkey Island,” “Tales of Monkey Island”) and serving as a direct continuation of “LeChuck’s Revenge”.
The third and fourth games were made after Gilbert and Grossman had both left LucasArts and didn’t involve them. Both did make some contributions to the episodic fifth game which was created by Telltale Games.
Gilbert is spearheading the project which has been in secret development for over two years and will also see the return of Dominic Armato as the voice of fan-favourite Guybrush Threepwood.
The original point-and-click titles are considered a cornerstone of late 80s/early 90s PC gaming and followed the misadventures of the hapless Threepwood as he struggles to become the most notorious pirate in the Caribbean, defeat the plans of the evil undead pirate LeChuck and win the heart of Governor Elaine Marley.
A new teaser trailer to accompany this announcement has been released with the game currently targeting a release sometime in 2022. Special Edition versions of the first two “Monkey Island” games are now available on Steam, GOG.com and Xbox.
