In a surprisingly abrupt turn of events, the planned “Beauty and the Beast” prequel TV series has been put on indefinite hold.

The project was developed as a series that would feature Josh Gad and Luke Evans reprising their roles as Gaston and LeFou, respectively, in an origin story of the two characters from the 2017 film.

In June last year, the project was handed an eight-episode order with Briana Middleton cast as LeFou’s stepsister Tilly with the production gearing up to shoot this Summer in Europe. Rita Ora, Fra Fee and Jelani Alladin would also have starred.

Now though, the series has been put on hold amid delays with creative elements that wouldn’t be ready in time, to scheduling challenges with some of the actors having booked for other projects beginning in August.

With the window of availability shrinking, Disney+ opted to put the series on hold. Sources tell THR the show is still planning to eventually be made though it’s unclear if the cast will be available when (and if) that happens.
