Back in late 2020 came word that filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (“The Book of Boba Fett”) and his writer-director sister Rebecca Rodriguez (“Snowpiercer”) were developing a contemporary gender-swapped take on the classic masked vigilante character Zorro.
The new version centers on Sola Dominguez, a young Latinx underground artist, seeking vengeance for her father’s murder, who fights for social injustice as Zorro. Her life is threatened by several criminal organizations after she exposes them.
The project was set up at both CBS Studios and Universal TV, and was in development for NBC who passed on it. Now it has been resurrected with The CW coming on board along with Sean Tretta (“Mayans M.C.”) who will write the script and serve as showrunner.
Ben Silverman and Howard T. Owens’ Propagate is involved in this new incarnation with all above set to executive produce along with Rodney Ferrell, Geoff Clark, Eric Bromberg, John Gertz and Jay Weisleder.
Actress Sofia Vergara was attached as an executive producer to the NBC version but she is no longer involved in the project.
Over two decades ago Rodriguez was attached to direct the critically acclaimed “The Mask of Zorro” and cast Antonio Banderas as the title role before leaving the feature with Martin Campbell (“Goldeneye,” “Casino Royale”) taking over.
