HBO Max’s “Sex and the City” revival has had an impact, but probably not in the way it was expecting.
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “AND JUST LIKE THAT”
The show premiered its first two episodes on Thursday to very mixed critical and audience reviews, but much of the discussion centered around a key event.
That event? The death of Chris Noth’s Mr. Big who served as the love interest of Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker). Along with the absent Kim Cattrall, whose character was explained away as having moved to London, Noth’s John Preston (aka. Mr. Big) was one of the bigger fan favorite characters.
Noth’s character dies at the end of the first episode after suffering a heart attack while riding his Peloton stationary bike.
That moment has already had real world consequences as on Friday opening of the stock market, Peloton shares have fallen 12% in the hours since the episode’s release – a fall of more than $5 per share.
Peloton has since spent the last day or so having to do some unexpected PR, reportedly saying they were aware of their equipment being featured in an episode but did not know the context of the scene due to HBO’s confidentiality reasons.
A statement made through a cardiologist to US Weekly pointed out the easy majority of all cardiac-related deaths are preventable with lifestyle, diet and exercise changes and that Mr Big riding a Peloton bike would have helped delay his fatal heart attack. The character did have a previous cardiac event in the show’s sixth season.
“And Just Like That” is airing weekly on HBO Max with the first two episodes now available.
