Despite good reviews from critics, filmgoers weren’t in much of a mood to see adult drama it seems as Ridley Scott’s medieval epic “The Last Duel” has underwhelmed in its opening at the U.S. box-office.
20th Century Studios’ film, which cost a reported budget of at least $100 million, pulled in just $4.8 million in its opening weekend across 3,065 locations – half the amount of early estimates. The audience CinemaScore of B+ is decent but not as high as it could (or needs to) be.
The film’s underwhelming response is being chalked up to the hesitancy of older audiences to return to the multiplex as COVID-19 still powers on in some places. In addition, those who are venturing out likely going to “No Time to Die” which came in second with $24.2 million this weekend and sits at just under $450 million globally.
Younger audiences on the other hand are back in force, partly fuelling the success of “Halloween Kills” which had a $50 million opening which is the highest opening for a film released simultaneously on streaming (not including transactional PVOD like Disney’s ‘Premier Acccess’ titles).
“Venom: Let There Be Carnage” has begun its global rollout and now sits at $283.7 million to date, while “Dune” has taken in $129.3 million overseas so far.
