Producer Adi Shankar (“The Grey,” “Dredd”) has reportedly been tapped to create and showrun an upcoming animated series based on the popular “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” (PUBG) video game franchise.

South Korean holding company Krafton Inc. announced the hiring. Shankar was behind another game-to-animated series adaptation with Netflix’s “Castlevania” which closed out its four-season run earlier this year.

That series received very good reviews from both critics and fans throughout its run. Shankar said in a statement:

“As a player, I’ve been crushing the competition in the Battlegrounds since PUBG was released in 2017. I’m grateful to KRAFTON for the trust and confidence they’ve placed in me to execute my vision as a filmmaker and I’m excited to embark on this journey together.

To me, this animated project represents another step in the evolution of mending the torched bridge between the games industry and Hollywood. I look forward to revealing to everybody what winning a chicken dinner looks like.”

CH Kim, the CEO of Krafton Inc., says this project is just another step in a broader strategy of “expanding the PUBG Universe into a multimedia franchise.” The live-action short “Ground Zero” and the docuseries “Mysteries Unknown: Birth of the Battlegrounds” have previously been produced.

PUBG has sold over 70 million copies on PC and console, and received over one billion downloads on mobile. The title boasts more than 55 million gamers playing daily across all platforms and has snagged seven Guinness World Records.
