With the DC Comics adaptation “Black Adam” now in its final week of production, the film’s director Jaume Collet-Serra is trying out a bit of technical wizardry.
Actor Dwayne Johnson, who stars as the titular hero, has posted on Instagram saying the production is using a cutting edge combination of an advanced robot arm called a ‘Bolt’ together with a high speed ‘Phantom’ camera.
The latter reportedly will capture Johnson at a rate of 960 frames per second – 40 times faster than the 24 frames per second at which regular film is shot at. The result will be slow-motion images done with remarkable clarity.
The technology has been used at least once on film before – namely the Valkyrie flashback sequences involving Tessa Thompson and Cate Blanchett in “Thor: Ragnarok”. Director Taika Waititi used a Phantom high-speed camera that captured at a whopping 1200 frames per second.
So expect some sequences here to offer something similar to that (though with very different lighting and production design/costuming choices). “Black Adam” is slated for a theatrical release on July 29, 2022.
