Amazon’s planned “Tiger King” series, starring Nicolas Cage as Joe Exotic, has been shelved.

Speaking with Variety whilst out promoting “Pig” for which he is scoring rave reviews, the actor revealed that he is no longer scheduled to be a part of the project.

He adds that the series itself seems to have taken too long to come together:

“I read two excellent scripts, which I did think were excellent, but I think Amazon ultimately felt that it was material that had become past tense because it took so long for it come together. They felt at one point that it was lightning in a bottle, but that point has since faded into the distance and it’s no longer relevant.”

Sources for the trade add that the project, produced by Imagine and CBS Studios and inspired by the Netflix docu-series, may be shopped to other outlets.

The Amazon series is entirely separate from the limited series “Joe Exotic” currently in the works at Peacock. That adaptation remains very much alive with John Cameron Mitchell playing Joe and Kate McKinnon set as Carol Baskin. Nat Wolff, brother of Cage’s “Pig” co-star Alex Wolff, will play Travis Maldonado in that project.

Cage will next be seen playing a version of himself in Tom Gormican’s meta dark comedy “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent”.
