Michaela Coel is working on a new series for the BBC, one that could have links to her celebrated drama series “I May Destroy You” about a woman dealing with the trauma of sexual assault.
Coel herself and her castmates have previously downplayed the suggestion of a second season, and HBO chief content officer Casey Bloys says he doesn’t expect a return to the story though clearly wants to work with the “Chewing Gum” star/creator again.
As part of a virtual event on Tuesday, The BBC announced the project as one of six new series it is developing. However, drama controller Piers Wenger says that the idea remains embryonic and he can’t go into detail.
Wenger says: “It’s truly in Michaela’s head and it’s not for me to second guess that too much at this point. It’s at relatively early stages, but I wanted to let the fans of I May Destroy You know that there is a new show coming along. What relationship that show will have with the original series, [is for Michaela to decide]. There’s a relationship between Chewing Gum and I May Destroy You. There’s a through-line to her thinking. I suspect there may be elements [of I May Destroy You] but it’s really too early to say anything specific.”
Other forthcoming dramas from The BBC announced today include Dolly Alderton’s adaptation of her popular autobiography “Everything I Know About Love,” BIFA-winning writer Theresa Ikoko’s adaptation of her forthcoming novel “Wahala” about Anglo-Nigerian female flatmates on London, the Black British music sibling rivalry drama “Champion,” Stefan Golaszewski’s four-part marital drama “Marriage,” the poverty drama “Cash Carraway,” and the 18th-century Yorkshire-set crime drama “The Gallows Pole” about the Cragg Vale Coiners counterfeiting scheme.
