Alvarez On “Old Man Leatherface” Approach

Over a year ago came word that “Evil Dead” remake and “Don’t Breathe” director Fede Alvarez is set to produce a new “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” feature.

Tobe Hooper helmed the original 1974 feature which followed two siblings and three of their friends en route to visit their grandfather’s grave in Texas. They end up falling victim to a family of cannibalistic psychopaths and must survive the terrors of Leatherface and his family.

The original spawned three sequels, then a 2003 reboot starring Jessica Biel that had major success. That reboot scored a 2006 prequel, then came a 2013 sequel and a 2017 prequel to the original film.

When this was announced, it appeared to be a direct sequel to the original 1974 film – ignoring all the others. Then in August, just one week into filming, directors Andy & Ryan Tohill abruptly exited the movie with David Blue Garcia taking over.

The filming was completed and is now in post. Speaking with Bloody Digusting, Alvarez confirmed the film’s status and talked about the old school approach they used:

“It is a direct sequel, and it is the same character. It is old man Leatherface. Everything is classic, old school gags. A lot of the approach that we had with ‘Evil Dead’ – never VFX, to do everything on camera. It’s a very old school approach to filmmaking. Vintage lenses… it’s very similar to the original film.”

Elsie Fisher, Sarah Yarkin, Mark Burnham, Moe Dunford, Olwen Fouéré, Alice Krige, Jacob Latimore, Nell Hudson, Jessica Allain, Sam Douglas, William Hope, and Jolyon Coy star in the film which hasn’t set a release date as yet.
