While Marvel Studios’ “WandaVision” series directly leads into Sam Raimi’s “Doctor Strange” sequel film, it turns out that “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” series will have ties to several upcoming titles.
The six-episode series picks up after the events of “Avengers: Endgame” with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) deciding whether or not he’s ready to step into the role of Captain America and teaming up with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) to take on a new threat.
Speaking with EW this week, showrunner Malcolm Spellman was asked if the series might lead into future films and possible new seasons of the show. He revealed that he can think of “three projects in the future that directly tie into this series” but he’s not allowed to talk about which ones.
Marvel chief Kevin Feige adds that talking about future seasons and future appearances for these characters in other works goes into “the spoiler realm… we have a future charted for characters post-‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier,’ but I don’t want to say much more than that.”
While “WandaVision” had an X-Men connection with Evan Peters as Quicksilver, albeit more for a gag than anything, set photos have indicated the series pays a visit at some point to the fictional island nation of Madripoor – a frequent haunt of Wolverine.
Feige confirms the series has a direct reference to a location that would have been impossible to feature before Marvel gained the Fox characters, but it’s not clear if he’s referring to Madripoor or something else: “There’s a setting in particular that people have already glimpsed in some of the trailers that is a setting from the Marvel Comics that was not previously available to us, but it’s more of an Easter egg in and of itself.”
“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” debuts on March 19th.
