Disney+ Passes 100 Million Subscribers

Disney+ has reportedly topped the 100 million subscribers worldwide mark, Disney CEO Bob Chapek confirming the numbers during its annual shareholders meeting.

That’s up from the 94.9 million the studio reported last month. Chapek says the service’s enormous success has inspired them to significantly increase their investment in high-quality content development.

As a result, they have set a target of 100-plus new titles per year from across Disney Animation, Disney Live Action, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic.

He adds the direct-to-consumer business is the company’s top priority now, and “our robust pipeline of content will continue to fuel its growth.”

All this good news has driven Disney’s stock price to record highs, closing at just under $202 a share on Monday – to put that in comparison, in March last year the stock closed at a “COVID low” of $79.

Chapek also says ESPN+ will soon be embedded into Hulu in a way that allows subscribers of both to easily move between the platforms.

The company also released a trailer for “Secrets of the Whales,” the new Nat Geo four-part documentary series produced by James Cameron and narrated by Sigourney Weaver. That series explores the mysterious and beautiful world of five different whale species: orcas, humpbacks, belugas, narwhals, and sperm whales.
