PS5 Pro With Two GPUs In The Works?

Here’s an unexpected new wrinkle in the gaming world.

Prior to release, the Xbox Series X was seen as more powerful than the PS5 though upon release and in practice it seems the consoles have been effectively even and both faring very well against mid-high range PCs.

That could potentially change with the inevitable mid-generation refresh in a few years, and now T3 reports that a patent placed by Sony Entertainment Interactive suggests the company is already at work on a PS5 Pro – one that could include two GPU elements as opposed to the usual one.

The patent reportedly describes a “scalable game console” where “a second GPU [is] communicatively coupled to the first GPU” and that the system is for “home console and cloud gaming” usage.

Basically the PS5 and Xbox Series X run off a ‘SoC’ (System On a Chip) which combines a computer’s CPU, GPU and other input/output and memory components all on a single chip.

The patent here notes that “plural SoCs may be used to provide a ‘high-end’ version of the console with greater processing and storage capability” along with more memory and features that may be used for a cloud-optimised version.
