Netflix Could Break MGM Oscars Record

Having put out more product than the major studios this year, Netflix could reportedly give MGM a run for its money for the most best picture Oscar nominations from any studio in history reports Variety.

MGM has held the record since 1937 when it had five films nominated (out of ten total) for the top prize – at the time the studio was the major heavyweight in Hollywood. Netflix has gone for Best Picture glory before with both “Roma” in 2018 and both “Marriage Story” and “The Irishman” last year.

However this year it has several serious contenders in the fire including “Mank,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “Da 5 Bloods,” “The Life Ahead,” “Pieces of a Woman” and unknowns at this point like “The Prom” and “The Midnight Sky”.

At the same time the pandemic has prevented studios from releasing their movies widely in theaters and so the streamer is on track to make history says the trade, though advises that the push back of the awards qualification deadline to end of February could still shake things up and reduce the company’s chances.
