Hollywood actor Johnny Depp has reportedly lost his defamation case in the UK’s High Court against tabloid newspaper The Sun over its 2018 article.
In the ruling, Judge Andrew Nicol said he accepted claims from the actor’s ex-wife actress Amber Heard that he had violently assaulted her during their tempestuous five-year relationship.
Heard has reportedly accused Mr Depp of assault on fourteen separate occasions and Nicol says he accepted twelve of these accounts were true including three days of “sustained and multiple assaults” while they were in Australia.
Nicol says: “I have found that the great majority of alleged assaults of Ms Heard by Mr Depp have been proved to the civil standard. The claimant has not succeeded in his action for libel.”
The article in question tied to Depp’s casting in the “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them” franchise at Warner Bros. Pictures, a piece of casting that has proven contentious among fans in recent years with all the tabloid headlines.
Depp’s legal team has indicated the court’s decision will be appealed. Depp has also filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Heard in a Virginia court over an opinion piece she wrote in The Washington Post.
