“Star Trek” Series Planned Through 2027

However you feel about the modern series incarnations of “Star Trek,” be ready because you’ll be getting plenty more of it.

Relaunched in 2017 with “Star Trek: Discovery,” the franchise has since seen the arrival of “Star Trek: Picard,” the animated comedy “Star Trek: Lower Decks” and the upcoming Enterprise set “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” along with the kids Nickelodeon series “Star Trek: Prodigy”.

Don’t think it’s going to end there. Alex Kurtzman, arguably the chief overseer of the various “Star Trek” shows currently on air, recently spoke with THR for one of their podcasts and explains that he and his team have plans in place that could see one form of “Star Trek” or another continuing on TV for at least another seven years:

“Heather Kaden and Aaron Baiers, who work with me at [production company] Secret Hideout – we literally just got off a call with the network mapping out with us through 2027. Now when I say that, it’s not like it’s set in stone. It’s just, ‘Here’s a plan. Here’s what we’re looking at. Here’s how the different shows are going to drop.’

Consider the fact that it takes a year from inception – from starting production – to airing, you have to plan way, way, way in advance to get these things done, and you have to stay on top of the zeitgeists and make sure that what you’re doing is relevant. So you have to plan so far in advance now in different kinds of ways [like safety and budget] to seem loose and improvisational, but there’s nothing loose and improvisational about it.”

The comments come as CBS All Access launched the third season of “Star Trek: Discovery” yesterday to quite positive reviews, the show garnering acclaim for its shift not just in the setting to the previously unexplored 32nd century, but also in tone to a show more focused on hope and a more classic “Star Trek” mold.
