Filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari”) has come onboard to re-write and direct a live-action take on Makoto Shinkai’s acclaimed 2016 anime “Your Name” for Paramount Pictures, Bad Robot Productions and Toho.
The story centers on Tokyo highschooler Taki Tachibana and Mitsuha Miyamizu from the rural Itomori, who discover they have the ability to switch bodies with one another as a natural disaster threatens to destroy their lives. They must journey to meet each other and save their worlds before it’s too late.
The film became a runaway critical and commercial success upon its release, grossing over $303 million in Japan alone and becoming one of the country’s biggest hits. Chung takes over from “The Amazing Spider-Man” director Marc Webb who was initially lined up to direct.
Emily V. Gordon (“The Big Sick”) and Eric Heisserer (“Arrival”) worked on the most recent drafts of the script while J.J. Abrams and Genki Kawamura will produce.
