Households With Multiple SVODs Rising Fast

Leichtman Research Group has released their fourteenth annual study of streaming, using a sample of 1,990 households – a report indicating the penetration of multiple subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services is still growing.

In the new study, the company found that 78% of households have a subscription to Netflix, Amazon Prime or Hulu – up from 69% in 2018 and 52% in 2015.

However the increase is even greater for those who have more than one of those three, with 55% now in that category – up from 43% in 2018 and 20% in 2015.

The study also included a dozen newer services such as Disney+, HBO Max and Peacock. They found that 82% of all households have at least one of them, while a major 49% have three or more – breaking the conventional wisdom that three was the limit per household.

Part of the reason for that is the continual fading of pay-TV. 58% of TV households get both pay-TV and SVOD services while 20% have switched to SVOD only, 16% are still pay-TV only and 6% have neither.

Usage is also up – 40% of adults stream an SVOD service daily, up from 30% in 2018 and 16% in 2015.
