George Miller Considers Furiosa’s Future

Just over five years after its release, “Mad Max: Fury Road” director George Miller has given a rare in-depth interview as part of an hour-long chat for ReedPop’s Metaverse at this year’s virtual New York Comic-Con.

MTV and Happy Sad Confused podcast host Josh Horowitz hosted the chat to celebrate the film’s five year anniversary. While much of the discussion was devoted to the famous difficulty of filming the project, at one point Horowitz asked Miller what the director believes happens to Furiosa after the credits roll.

Miller cited famed mythology historian and professor Joseph Campbell in his answer. History shows us removing one dictator can often lead to another rising in their wake:

“There’s two ways to go. One is utopian, which is not an interesting story, really. I’ve somehow imagined that the first thing she would do in line with that, is go up and release the water… it wasn’t withheld… A New Deal, politically.

Campbell said that the usual story is that today’s hero becomes tomorrow’s tyrant. The hero is the agent of change. They basically relinquish self-interest in order for some common good. [Campbell] basically says … you love what you’ve built, or saved, too much. You become holdfast. You become the orthodoxy. You develop the dogma and basically then you have to protect it. That tends to be the rhythm of these things.”

Despite being torn between these two outlooks, he says he thinks Furiosa would be able to avoid becoming as bad as the man she replaced:

“I think she’s too smart to fall into that trap. She’s already seen it with the Immortan Joe. I believe he went through the same process. He was probably a heroic character in his own time.”

We’re unlikely to see that outcome as the talk of the franchise is that a prequel is in the works with a younger version of Charlize Theron’s iconic modern female action character. Meanwhile the full interview with Miller can be found below:
