The first photos have been released from “Kill List” and “Free Fire” director Ben Wheatley’s new film adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s psychological thriller novel “Rebecca” which is coming to Netflix with The Daily Mail posting the photos and saying the film will be released on October 21st.
The original story follows an American woman who marries widower Maximillian de Winter after a whirlwind romance, and moves into his rambling mansion named Manderley.
Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper, was profoundly devoted to Max’s first wife Rebecca and continuously psychologically undermines her ‘replacement’. At the same time divers discover the remains of Rebecca’s boat and the truth about her relationship with Max and her death begin to emerge.
The book was previously adapted in 1940 as the first American film by then rising young director Alfred Hitchcock – that version went on to score a Best Picture and Best Cinematography Oscar win along with nine other nominations.
Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine and Judith Anderson starred in that take while Armie Hammer, Lily James and Kristin Scott-Thomas take on their respective roles in this version. Wheatley and screenwriter Jane Goldman penned this take which James describes as “sometimes trippy and psychedelic”.
