While there were a number of panels at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, none seemed to have quite as big or as warm a reception as “Spaceballs: The New One” this evening.
One of the biggest draws was Rick Moranis who made an appearance in person in the cavernous Hall H on Friday afternoon. Moranis has been largely absent from movies and television for decades. He appeared to a standing ovation and chants of “Rick! Rick! Rick!”.
Also on hand were fellow returnee Daphne Zuniga as well as Josh Gad, Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman along with director Josh Greenbaum and writers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit.
Brooks appeared in a recorded video and while no trailer was shown, videos did show some of the cast reuniting and Brooks recording lines. Brooks reportedly performed the role in mo-cap rather than using the gold makeup.
Lewis Pullman read out a letter purportedly written by his father, Bill Pullman, about how great it was to be part of a family, while ignoring their own father-son relationship.
Some of the biggest laughs were plans of for a whole Spaceballs cinematic universe – the All-Mighty Schwartz Saga (ASSwhole) – complete with nine phases and countless titles from “Spaceballs: The SnyderCut,” “2 Space 2 Balls,” “Mawg: The Last Dawg Standing,” “Dark Helmet: Origins,” “Pizza the Hutt: Cheesy Does It” and more.
