Back in November last year, the news came that filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley were set to write, produce and direct the next film in the “Star Trek” franchise.
The pair are best known for their work writing and directing 2018’s acclaimed comedy “Game Night” and 2023’s well-regarded “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves”. They also wrote the script for the first Tom Holland-led MCU film “Spider-Man: Homecoming”.
At the time, it was also said that the new film was to be a “completely new take in the Star Trek universe and is not connected to any previous or current television series, movie, or prior movie development projects.”
Now, the pair appeared at San Diego Comic-Con this week and briefly offered an update on how their work fits into the franchise:
Daley: “[It’s] in progress, and we’re very excited about it. I think people will be surprised. I really can’t say anything other than that.”
Goldstein: “I think we’ve said in the past…it won’t be the characters that you’ve seen previously in your Star Trek movies. So there will be a new take on that. And I think it’ll probably be a little further into the future than we’ve been before. What draws us to it is the opportunity to do a different spin.”
How far into the future is the big question. The TNG/DS9/Voyager/Picard era spans the late 24th century, but the franchise’s “Discovery” and “Starfleet Academy” series are set in the 32nd century with the key event known as The Burn – which desolated the galaxy – taking place in 3069. Presumably the new film will be set post-Picard but pre-Burn.
Both “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” and “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” are the only live-action television series in the franchise currently in production, with both shows set to end in 2027 with seasons that have already wrapped filming.
No plans go beyond that, while the last film to get a theatrical release was 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond”.
