Jude Law is in talks to play the villainous Captain James Hook in “Peter Pan & Wendy,” Disney Pictures’ live-action adaptation of their own 1953 animated take on J.M. Barrie’s novel.
“Pete’s Dragon” and “The Old Man and the Gun” director David Lowery is on board to direct the project which he co-wrote with Toby Halbrooks. Jim Whitaker is producing.
The Disney cartoon remains the most successful adaptation of Barrie’s work about the boy who wouldn’t grow up and the children whom he whisks away to the magical world of Neverland. While there were rumors of this film ending up on Disney+, this version is now expected to go theatrical.
Dustin Hoffman, Jason Isaacs, Christopher Walken and Garrett Hedlund have also played the role of Captain Hook in live-action form over the past three decades.
Disney is coming off a very strong year of live-action adaptations with both “Aladdin” and “The Lion King” grossing $1 billion at the global box office. Disney was so happy with its “Aladdin” live-action film that it has already begun developing a sequel to the film.
Law is coming off of HBO’s “The New Pope” and will be seen later this year in the HBO mini-series “The Third Day”. He’s also set to reprise his roles of Albus Dumbledore and Dr. John Watson in third entries in the “Fantastic Beasts” and “Sherlock Holmes” franchises respectively.
