David Byrne’s American Utopia
Spike Lee is returning to HBO for a filmed version of the acclaimed Broadway show “David Byrne’s American Utopia” which Lee helmed during the show’s run at the Hudson Theater. It’s set to premiere later this year.
The stage production has Byrne and eleven musical artists from around the world performing songs from the 2018 album of the same title, as well as songs from Byrne’s Talking Heads and solo catalog. [Source: The Live Feed]
72nd Emmy Awards
Jimmy Kimmel will return to host the 72nd Emmy Awards on ABC – his third time following similar hostings in 2012 and 2016. The Primetime Emmy telecast will take place as planned on Sunday, September 20th.
At present it’s unclear how the show will look in these pandemic times. Kimmel says in a statement: “I don’t know where we will do this or how we will do this or even why we are doing this, but we are doing it and I am hosting it.” [Source: Variety]
East Wing
Debra Messing is attached in the lead role of the new Starz comedy series “East Wing” which hails from writers and creators Ali Wentworth and Liz Tuccillo. Wentworth is also set to star alongside Messing.
Set in the 1980s, Messing plays Hollis Carlisle – a hostess extraordinaire who juggles her threatened husband, rebellious children, Nancy Reagan’s Chief of Staff and a crippling social anxiety disorder. Wentworth recurs as her best friend Kelly Forbes – a stay at home mom who is threatened by her friend’s success. [Source: TV Line]
Creepshow
Shudder has ordered a full set of scripts for a third season of its series based on George A. Romero’s iconic 1982 movie “Creepshow”. The order comes despite the fact the second season had only just begun production when the pandemic shut it down.
The script order is reportedly a contingency plan to allow showrunner Gerg Nicotero and the creatives behind the show to get as far ahead as possible. [Source: Bloody Disgusting]
The Bold and the Beautiful
Long-running CBS soap opera “The Bold and the Beautiful” has become the first major series on American soil to resume filming since the COVID-19 pandemic with shooting to kick off tomorrow – three months after shutting down.
The series returns with several new safety precautions that fall in line with LA County and the City of Los Angeles requirements and have been approved by the guilds and Television City owner Hackman Capital Partners. [Source: Variety]
