Black Filmmakers Works Go Free On VOD

In the wake of what’s going on around the world, and particularly in the United States at the moment in regards to the Black Lives Matter movement, several VOD and SVOD services are stepping up to educate everyone in an unexpected way.

Following the news earlier this week that “Just Mercy” was being offered to rent for free for the entire month of June on multiple U.S. digital services, others are now following suit such as Paramount who are offering Ava DuVernay’s Oscar-winning film “Selma” for free on multiple services including iTunes, Amazon and more.

Also getting involved are The Criterion Channel who are making around sixteen films about and by black voices available for free including Maya Angelou’s “Down in the Delta,” Agnes Varda’s “Black Panthers,” Julie Dash’s “Daughters of the Dust,” Khalik Allah’s “Black Mother” and more.

Then there’s Magnolia Pictures which is making three great documentaries – “I Am Not Your Negro,” “Whose Streets?” and “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am” available to rent for free for a 24-hour period across three Sundays starting this week. Finally, Shudder’s documentary “Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror” is available for free through their website and app.
