The Disney+ streaming service hasn’t learned its lesson.
Just over a month after it was found that bad CG hair was added to Daryl Hannah’s bare bottom in a scene in “Splash,” in the process turning her into a furry monstrosity, an even more extreme example of pointless censorship has been found on the service.
Specifically this time its one of Disney’s own shows, the Selena Gomez-led fantasy teen sitcom “Wizards of Waverly Place” which ran on the Disney channel from 2007 to 2012. Eagle eyed viewers have spotted that actress Maria Canals Barrera – who plays the mother – has had a tiny hint of cleavage digitally blurred out on screen. The effect is so distracting that it has the opposite effect of that intended, and brings even more attention to her chest.
Understandably social media is having a field day for censoring their material, many of them Disney fans. There’s also confusion as to why something is fine for the Disney Channel but not the Disney+ service?
This also follows on from an edited version of “Back to the Future Part II” popping up on Netflix where a magazine with a scantily clad model on the front was edited out – destroying a narrative reveal in the process. The film’s co-writer Bob Gale cleared up the matter, blaming Universal for submitting the wrong print and revealing Gale has since ordered the studio to destroy the edited version of the movie.
All the recent censorship controversies on streaming platforms have once again made the importance of physical media a hot topic of conversation again amongst viewers. There’s also expected to be more examples of this kind of censorship showing up as people keep exploring content on the services.
