“National Treasure” Getting A Disney+ Series

The “National Treasure” franchise, dormant since the second film in 2007, appears to be coming back in a big way.

The historical theatrical adventure action mystery films starred Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Gates, a treasure hunter who uncovers hidden troves and secrets from U.S. history. Jon Voight, Diane Kruger and Justin Bartha co-starred in both.

Collider spoke with producer Jerry Bruckheimer who confirmed that not only is a third film on the way, but a Disney+ TV series now in development as well. Out doing promotion for his new Starz series “Hightown,” Bruckheimer explained

“We’re certainly working on one [National Treasure] for streaming and we’re working on one for the big screen. Hopefully, they’ll both come together and we’ll bring you another National Treasure, but they’re both very active….The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast.”

Chris Bremner (“Bad Boys for Life”) has been working on the script for the third film since January, and helmer Jon Turtletaub is expected to return. Even so, Bruckheimer says the Disney+ series is actually further along in development: “The film version is being written right now. The television version is in process. We have a pilot script done and an outline of the future episodes.”

The two previous films were made on a combined budget of $230 million and pulled in $804.9 million at the box-office.
