HBO Max has picked up Angel Manuel Soto’s 2020 Sundance award winner “Charm City Kings” from Sony Pictures with plans to release it on the new streaming service later this year.
‘Charm’ follows Mouse (DiāAllo Winston), a young man who desperately wants to join The Midnight Clique, an infamous group of Baltimore dirt bike riders who rule the summertime streets.
When Midnightās leader, Blax (Mill), takes 14-year-old Mouse under his wing, the teen soon finds himself torn between the straight-and-narrow and a road filled with fast money and violence.
The film was originally slated for an April 10th theatrical release until the coronavirus pandemic upset plans.
The acquisition comes on the heels of last weekās deal for the Seth Rogen-led comedy “An American Pickle” also from Sony. The streamer, which launches May 27th, also handed out a straight-to-series today for an unscripted cooking show from Selena Gomez.
HBO Max also landed “Watchmen” and “24” actress Jean Smart to star in a ten episode single-camera dark comedy that will explore a dark mentorship that forms between a Las Vegas diva (Smart) and an entitled, 25-year-old outcast.
That comedy hails from “Broad City” alums Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, and all three will executive produce alongside “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” co-creator Michael Shur.
