Apple Closes Stores, Shifts WWDC

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Apple has announced that its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June will be turned into a virtual online-only event.

The tech giant announced plans to commit $1 million to organizations in San Jose to offset lost revenue associated with the WWDC’s traditional in-person format. The WWDC will showcase Apple’s latest developments across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS.

The news comes as Apple is also shutting down its nearly 500 retail stores worldwide outside of China until March 27th in an effort to minimize the spread of COVID-19. The move was announced late yesterday in a statement by CEO Tim Cook.

In the Greater China region, where the COVID-19 outbreak first erupted and where it’s now rapidly dissipating, Apple closed down all its stores in early February and has now reopened them all as of yesterday.

Apple will continue to operate its online stores, as well as the App Store.
